Erotic Romance and Erotica: Is There A Difference?

Yes there is! The easy answer is that an erotic romance has a plot where the characters must end in a happily ever after. Whereas erotica does not have to have a plot where the building of the characters' relationship is essential to the plot and love scenes.

I also believe that the romantic relationship and the story must be connected. In other words without the romantic relationship between the characters will the story hold up? For a romance, the answer is no.

A romance novel is about how the main characters' romance is affecting their lives. The only difference with an erotic romance is that the love making is not behind closed doors. It is spelled out in the book.

However in Erotica, the sex is the primary focus of the book with a plot being secondary.

Either way whether it is sweet, sensual, spicy or erotica, it's a matter of choice for the author and the reader
